Project Goals
- Integration of the LifeSkills curriculum in school and non-school settings and expanding opportunities for middle school students to learn and practice emotionally and socially affirming behaviors.
- Professional development opportunities for teachers, counselors and other youth services providers who work directly with middle school youth in school or non-school settings.
- Engagement of school and community partners in developing and implementing plans for promoting life skills beyond the classroom, as part of a larger vision of ensuring that all young people have the skills they need to be ready for college, work and life.
Accomplishments
- Trained 140 WCPSS Healthful Living teachers and 16 community presenters to deliver LifeSkills curriculum in schools and after-school programs.
- Introduced LifeSkills curriculum to approximately 19,312 Wake County middle school students in 2006-07.
- Partnered with Communities in Schools Wake County (CISWC) to use LifeSkills curriculum for elementary and middle school summer programs.
- Delivered LifeSkills instruction to 365 students in CIS Wake summer program.
- Created alignment documents as a resource for teachers, showing the alignment between the LifeSkills curriculum and Healthful Living North Carolina standard course of study.
- Presented the Skills for Life initiative and the LifeSkills curriculum in a session at the Wake County Schools district-wide staff development day for middle school Healthful Living teachers.
- Created the Skills for Life Community Leadership Team as a collaborative, grant advisory group comprised of representatives from various community based organizations.
